Jiaxing Ancient City Footbridge, China

The Red Bridge of Fate

An invisible red string connects those who are pre-destined to meet regardless of time, place, or circumstances – as an old Chinese saying, “The string may stretch or tangle, but it will never break.”

In Jiaxing, people live through incredible stories of both the old and the new. It is as if fate intended this place to prosper and witness many important events in the history of China. The Grand Canal known for her rich traditions, culture and landmarks, tells the story of the historic journey of the Chinese revolutionary events, starting with the “Red Boat”. The Red Bridge of Fate opens a dialogue between the past, present, and future. It highlights the importance of architecture and infrastructure in connecting public nodes, historical places, and cultural landmarks. The bridge resembles the “red string of fate”, which also reflects Jiaxing’s heritage and commercial values in China’s fate to continue to flourish and prosper.
